Inherit starts permanent carbon removal in Denmark with Tønder Biogas and Project Greensand
The first load of biogenic CO2 left Tønder in southern Jutland on Wednesday, bound for permanent storage beneath the Danish North Sea. It makes Inherit the first company to deliver permanent carbon removal into both of Europe’s operating CO2 storage sites.
Oslo/Tønder, 29 September 2026 – Inherit Carbon Solutions has started operations at its second carbon removal project, and its first in Denmark. On Wednesday 23 September, the first load of liquefied biogenic CO2 was collected at Tønder Biogas in southern Jutland to be transported by road to Esbjerg, where it enters Project Greensand for permanent geological storage under the Danish North Sea.
The project rests on two partnerships: a partnership with Tønder Biogas A/S, owned by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, and delivery of that CO2 into Project Greensand, operated by INEOS Energy. Inherit is taking approximately 10,000 tonnes of biogenic CO2 per year from Tønder.
The first delivery comes three working days after King Frederik X formally opened Greensand in Esbjerg on 18 September. This is the European Union’s first full-scale CO2 storage site in operation. Inherit is the only Norwegian company developing projects in the Greensand value chain.

Inherit now delivers CO2 into both of Europe’s operating CO2 storage sites: Northern Lights in Norway, where the company’s first project has been in operation since February 2026, and Greensand in Denmark.

How the removal works
CO2 is released as a byproduct when organic waste is turned into biogas. At Tønder a share of that CO2 is used by a partner to produce e-methanol, a share of it is now captured and liquefied for permanent storage. Inherit's transport partner Litra trucks it to Esbjerg, where it is injected into a reservoir deep beneath the North Sea.
Every tonne is third-party verified and issued as CO2 Removal Certificates (CORCs) through the Puro.earth registry, with full chain of custody from the biogas facility to the storage reservoir.
What comes next
Tønder is Inherit’s second project in operation. The company is developing further BECCS projects (bioenergy with carbon capture and storage) at biogas and wastewater facilities in Denmark and Norway.
